I was curious about how much it cost to rent plates, glasses, and silverware for a wedding per person? We will have about 250 guests. I really don't want to use paper plates but it seems like the cost of renting real ones will be outrageous.

it is pretty expensive, and if you're like me that i don't want to serve in paper plates because that doesn't fit into my idea of how beautiful the tables are going to look with the plates and glasses and silverware, but it isn't in the budget to spend too much money on the plates and etc... then you might want to consider plastic plates that look almost real.. i found these pages that i'm considering. hope it helps.

Here in NC it seems to run about .35 per item( per cup, saucer, plate etc) up to .50 per item, with flatware about an additional 1.45 per place setting.(2 forks ,knife,b&b knife 2 spoons). Glass ware I'm not sure of
If you are having to pay for this yourself and it is not included with either catering charge or venue cost( this varies from place to place) you have the option of using Polycarbonates. These are a hard plastic that look like Bone China but are either disposable or savable, even the flatware looks decent and is stronger. This flatware is called Reflections.( cased at 600 pcs per case). They now dub these as resposables, they run about $55 a case of 168. The blessing here is you don't have to fool with washing (before pick up) them and you don't have the worry of breakage/loss fees or pickup after the event. The new Legacy drinkware is also quite nice. If you want to take a look at these try webrestaurant.com. They are great for the DIY bride, and some caterers are beginning to use them because of cleanliness and sanitation issues.( not all venues have great kitchens if they do not serve food themselves which is controlled by law.)

Unless you want something specific most catering companies will include this in the price of all your food, etc...

I've been told about $1 a plate, but don't have any clue about silverware. And I'm sure that is not the price everyone charges.

you would have to shop around, prices are vary depending on your location and the rental company. A lot of caters include these items in their catering cost.
