Are you a photo buff that has tons of pictures , slides and negatives that you will want to save for a long time? Or are you a casual photographer that has family pictures that you want to hand down from generation to generation? Either way, photos do not last forever. The natural elements will take their toll on them and eventually they will not be worth anything. But you can preserve your photos for many, many years if you find a photo storage system.

A photo storage system for some people, consists of an old shoe box. But an old shoe box will not preserve your photos forever. Photo albums are a great way to store photos but not all albums treat your photos right. There are some photo albums that are acid free so the clear, protective sleeve does not eat your pictures. Negatives and slides will fade faster if they are subjected to heat and humidity or if they are interacting with chemicals. Find yourself some polyethylene or polypropylene or acid-free paper to store your slides or negatives in. Also, make sure your steel cabinet or paper box, acid free, is stored in an air conditioned room during the hot seasons.

Space bags are a great way to store many different items from blankets to silverware. If silverware is stored in a space bag, the air tight bag will not allow the silver to tarnish. So can you store photos, negatives or slides in space bags? You should be able to if you follow these suggestions. Do not throw loose photos, slides and negatives in a space bag. After vacuuming the air out, the photos may become bent. Place your pictures in an acid free container. Place the container in the space bag and then seal it. Vacuum the air out and your photos should be safe from chemicals, air and humidity. Plus, if they are in a container, they should stay in form and become bent. You may still want to store the space bag containing you photos in a air conditioned room during the summer.

Don't let bad decisions ruin all of your hard work and all of your memories. Treat your photos, negatives and slides with care and they should bring you enjoyment for many years to come. And think of the smiles on the faces of family members when they take a walk down memory lane with you.
