I use one of those 2 in 1 detergent-shine shield combos in my dishwasher but no matter how clean the dishes I put in the machine I get a few silverware covered in rust like brown spots. There is nothing wrong inside the washer as far as I can see. Any ideas for the cause or cure?
I can't rule out hardwater right away but the water is quite drinkable without any chlorine or lime taste as far as I can tell.
Guy: Yeah right, it would never occur to me that you would take me for a person who would eat with real silvers and then come here to ask questions about rusty dishwashers. I would be even surprized if that stuff is stainless steel!

Hard water. Need water softener!
It is rust. I bet you are using a detergent that has lemon. Try and fix the spots with a bit of steel wool and get new detergent. Electrisol is good.
That's happend to me. It seems I may have cheap silverwear and knives. They are supposed to be stainless steel, but they rust too. Go figure?
It may be harsh detergents breaking down some coating...oh yeah! I have no answer..I want to know too!

You put your silverware in the dishwasher?? I hope you mean stainless steel. We put our everyday stainless steel in the dishwasher BUT our silverware (real silver that is) is washed and dried by hand and then polished. Silverware in the dishwasher!! I never heard of that before!!
Try a another detergent and also try using a rinse agent like Jet Dry. Also, it could be due to hard water. Do you get yellow stains in the tub close to the faucet (evidence of hard water)? You may not see the evidence of hard water until you clean out the faucets. Simply, unscrew the little filter from the faucet and if you have little mineral rocks in there...you have hard water. Try Lemishine. It is a product that cleans the dishwasher from lime, rust and mineral buildups which could be a culprit for the stains on your dishes. Is your silverware stainless steel or silver? If it is silver use Haggerty's or Wrights's silver polish to remove tarnish. If it is stainless use white vinegar or club soda with a soft cloth and polish. Also the temperature of you water may be set too low. Depending on water hardness the water temperature may need to be adjusted.Check out the sites below and I hope this helps.
Your silverware is probably stainless steel. If it weren't, it would get REALLY rusty. But "stainless" can be an exaggeration. I suggest you get a gentle abrasive cleaner like Bon Ami or Soft Scrub and rub the spots with a sponge.
Is this happening with different dishwasher brands? Mine is a Bosch and I don't remember it happening with my GE
